Recipe AFBS

Recipe for Treatment and Prevention of AFB Disease. All Information based on one feeding for 20 hives.

Ingredients

0.5 liters - Caspian Solution Supplement
20 liters - syrup (or 50% sugar water)
2.5 kilograms - honey
2.5 kilograms - pollen
0.25 liters - lemon juice (for cold weather feeding)
1 teaspoon - antibiotic (20%)

Mixing Instructions

  1. In a separate container, mix 2.5 kilograms of pollen and 0.25 liters of lemon juice with 4 liters of warm water. Pollen mixes more readily in warm water.
  2. In a separate container, mix 2.5 kilograms of honey with 3 liters of warm water. Honey mixes more readily with warm water.
  3. In a separate container, mix the 1 teaspoon of antibiotics (based on 20% antibiotic strength) with 1 liter of water that is at room temperature. DO NOT use hot water for this step! Hot water will damage the antibiotic.
  4. Allow the pollen solution and the honey solution to cool to room temperature.
  5. Prepare 20 liters of syrup in a large pail.
  6. Mix antibiotic solution with pollen solution.
  7. Mix the antibiotic / pollen solution with the honey solution.
  8. Mix the final antibiotic / pollen / honey solution with the 20 liters of syrup. This mixing step will take some time.

The solutions can be mixed in different ways provided that the following two rules are NEVER broken.

  1. The antibiotic must never be exposed to warm water.
  2. The final solution must be thoroughly mixed.

This recipe must be used once a week in the spring for two generations for AFB disease treatment. For prevention in the fall use this solution one time with the amount of Caspian Solution, honey, pollen, lemon juice, and antibiotic reduced by fifty percent.

In the early spring it is important to remove all of the frames with infection and scale before the queen starts to lay the first generation. Any spores that may be in the honey or pollen or wax are not a problem.

If your colonies have AFB disease while there is population and brood mixed in the hive please contact Caspian Apiaries for a procedure to eliminate the disease in this situation.
